Do you know that we lose a teaspoon of volume in each decade of life? If you are a woman of post-menopause, this volume loss will accelerate. ☹ Our volume loss is due to the loss of fat pad, hyaluronic acid, and most importantly bone. Our volume loss is not uniform and is one dimension. Sometimes, the side that faces the sun most, will likely show more skin sagging (As we grow old, our skin loses elasticity too). So, what does this volume loss look like? Often, it is a deep nasolabial fold, corners of the mouth are downturn, and most notably jawing. Many of my clients who are in their 50s and 60s come to me due to jawing, but jawing is just the result of overall volume loss! Often the clients will tell me that these volume losses make them look stern and mean. Guess what? We cannot completely restore the volume loss but we can definitely help that stern look. We do it with a thing called Derma Filler.
Dermal fillers, often simply referred to as “fillers,” are a type of non-surgical cosmetic treatment used to restore volume and fullness to the face, diminish wrinkles, and enhance certain facial features. They consist of gel-like substances, such as hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, or poly-L-lactic acid, which are injected beneath the skin’s surface. MC Modern Skin, we use a filler called Revance. With all the fillers that are out on the market, this Revance mimics the natural body’s hyaluronic most. This results in the clients looking very natural after the fill is administered. The clients tend to have fewer side effects of cross-link hyaluronic acids such as Juvéderm. Revance can last from 1.5 years to 2 years. MC Modern Skin, we like using hyaluronic acids because if there is any issue with the filler, we can dissolve the filler with Hylenex.
Filler works by plumping up the area, filling in lines, wrinkles, and hollows, and adding volume to areas like the lips, cheeks, and temples. Fillers are commonly used to address issues like smile lines, marionette lines, and sagging cheeks. Often when we think of filler, we think of the Kardashians or looking fake. However, in the hands of an experienced and careful provider, the filler can look very natural even on lips! Just a more refreshed and fully rested look of oneself!
Here is a before and after photo of a lovely client of mine. She felt her marionette line was so deep that it gave her a stern and sad look. The after photo was taken immediately after the filler was placed via cannula. She hardly swelled or bruised. Even after the filler was in place, she still looked very natural.
Here is another before and after photo of a client who received filler in her lips. As we grow old, we lose volume in our lips (yes, even our lips). Our top mouth muscle moves inward due to loss of muscle tone, making our lips appear thinner. The second photo shows the client right after the filler. She gained fuller and more natural looking lips without looking fake.
